Career Outlook: 3D Artists

In 2008, 79,000 3D Artists were employed nationwide. Approximately 31,600 were employed by corporate entities in 2008, while 60% percent freelanced.

The field for 3D Artists is expected to grow on par with the U.S. economy, boasting a projected growth rate of 14% until 2018. While there will not be a sharp acceleration of job openings, the continued expansion of 3D animation into new markets will drive demand and create new job positions. Forecasts predict that 90,200 3D Artists will be employed nationwide in 2018.

Location is especially relevant to a 3D Artist's career opportunities. California employs the highest number of 3D artists in the country, with Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale, San Francisco, San Mateo and Redwood City serving as key employment areas.

The top wages are not necessarily found in areas where the concentration of 3D Artists is high. For instance, the District of Columbia pays the highest average hourly and annual wage for 3D Artists, followed closely by California. However only 110 3D Artists were employed in the District.

Expectations for a self-employed 3D artist can be very uncertain. While some artists may earn a comfortable salary, a large number must supplement their income with an additional job.

The art of 3D animation has extended far beyond cartoons. 3D artists are now employed in the advertising, television and entertainment industries, healthcare (especially as 3D medical animators), corporations, Internet websites, educational institutions or programs and government training videos.

With limited 3D artist career openings and an increasing number of creative individuals entering the field, expect competition to be fierce. Students with a minimum diploma certification in 3D animation, or a more valuable bachelor's degree will have an edge over competitors. Prospective 3D Artists are strongly recommended to assemble a portfolio to present samples of their work to potential employers.
